Dear Friends, 

Yikes! It is March and my pantry and freezer are developing bare spots. As a child who grew up with two nearby family farms, I have been a locavore since way before that word was invented. But, here mid-winter, my homegrown is now limited to kale, leeks, shallots, homemade pickles, and the last, hoarded bags of my own frozen tomatoes.

One of the surprising things about gardening is that you never know how the season is going to play out. Some summers bring tons of tomatoes, some years are all about beans, and other seasons make you feel like the Pope of Potatoes. My new, tiny garden has been packed with pleasant surprises all out of proportion to its size, but perhaps the most amazing way that it has thrilled me is that it is full of something that I won’t even eat: hummingbirds.

Welcome, Friends! I'm the host of Gardening Gusto, Katherine Whiteside.  I have been a champion of organic gardening for years (way before it was cool), embracing a healthful lifestyle with gusto! In exploring our site, we hope that you too will find the spark of excitement to push you into the great outdoors and grow your food (or flowers), naturally. I'm sure that once you try my fun and easy gardening ideas and look through our downloadable garden projects, you'll see how much joy you can begin growing. Gardening advice doesn't need to be stuffy and it certainly doesn't need to be complicated. Anyone can do it! No matter where you live and whether your gardening space and budget are big or small.  You can do it!
