In the late 1970’s, I had the great fortune to buy a house in the beautiful countryside of southwestern England. For a sheltered Southern girl, this period began my education in how people in other parts of the world live. I used the metric system, I discovered that certain English words have shockingly different meanings across The Pond, I learned to drive (and shift gears!) on the opposite side, but I never, ever learned to live without garlic.
During those late 20th century, very different times, the English hated, hated, hated the French. I always avoided talking politics, but realized how deep-seated this animosity was when I asked the rosy-cheeked farm woman at the outdoor market if she had garlic to go with the fresh lamb I had just purchased.
